If you see gunk — gravel, sand, dirt, muck — get a wooden toothpick and carefully scrape it out of the port. Pockets accumulate lint over months of use, and that lint compacts into a dense plug that blocks the cable from seating all the way in. Cleaning it out often restores a solid connection.

• Use wood or plastic — never metal, which can short the pins.
• Be gentle — scrape along the walls, not straight into the bottom.
• Blow it out with a can of compressed air when the big chunks are gone.

Does it work? Great. If it doesn't, now start to look for corrosion or physical damage. If anything looks warped or rusted, go to a professional phone repairman to fix any extensive issues that are beyond your skill level and resources.
